Conjecturing and Proving as Rational Behaviors

چکیده
My contribution relies on the research work carried on in the last fifteen years by the Genoa Research Group in Mathematics Education, which mainly concerned the early approach to conjecturing and proving (grades VII-VIII) and related cognitive and epistemological issues. Our results have been presented at the PME Conferences in Lisbon (1994, PME-XVIII: research report presented by Boero), Recife (PME-XIX, RR pres. by Garuti), Valencia (1996, PME-XX: RRs pres. by Boero and Garuti), Lahti (1997, PME-XXI: research forum pres. by Maria Alessandra Mariotti; Genoa, Modena and Pisa teams involved), Stellenbosch (1998, PME-XXII: RR pres. by Boero), Haifa (1999, PME-XXIII: RRs pres. by Boero and Douek). A comprehensive description of the experimental and theoretical investigation carried on by the Genoa Group in the period 1993-2005 is presented in the book "Theorems in school: from history, epistemology and cognition to classroom practice" (see Chapters 7, 10, 12, 13) edited by me and published by Sense Publ. in 2007.

Explanatory Diagnosis: Conjecturing Actions to Explain Observations
Our concern in this paper is with conjecturing diagnoses to explain what happened to a system, given a theory of system behaviour and some observed (aberrant) behaviour. We characterize what happened by introducing the notion of explanatory diagnoses in the language of the situation calculus. Explanatory diagnosesconjecture sequencesof actions to account for a change in system behaviour. We sho...
متن کاملRigorous Experimental Combinatorics: Project Description
My research students and I continued to practice a new research methodology, that can be loosely called rigorous experimental mathematics. It has something in common with both “mainstream” experimental mathematics, as preached by the Borwein brothers, David Bailey, Victor Moll, and their collaborators, (see e.g. the masterpiece [BB], and the recent collection [BBCGLM]), and automated theorem pr...
متن کاملCabri as a Shared Workspace within the Proving Process
This paper will discuss some findings from a study investigating the development of the proving process in a dynamic geometry environment. Through a detailed analysis of students’ processes when working with open geometry problems involving conjecturing and proving in Cabri, an analytical and explanatory framework has been developed. This paper examines in particular the interactions between th...
